9 WEB SITES TO PUBLISH THE STUDENTS´ WORK

Publishing content online in eye-catching formats is easier than ever. Use these easy-to-use tools to publish, share and celebrate student work.

Online content publishing (leaving out the massive blogging category) falls into two broad categories.

  1. Some convert publications created solely in other applications, such as Microsoft Word or in PDF format, into an interactive online format. This works well to transform existing student work into an online portfolio.
  2. In other websites, the creation is accomplished on the site itself. The text, images, etc. are added to each page and the final product is a virtual book.

Keep these two types of online publishing in mind when you are designing student projects.

Check out these sites to publish student work:

  • Yudu: Lets you upload all sorts of content including Word documents and PDFs. It will quickly convert the documents into an impressive virtual magazine with flipping pages. Account creation is optional but an email address is required. You can also set privacy settings to public or private.
  • Flipsnack: Very similar to Yudu and is extremely easy to use. The only caveat is the document you upload must be in PDF format. If you have a copy machine at school that scans into PDF, load it with student work, create a PDF and convert it into a virtual book.
  • Issuu: Pronounced “issue”, is another option to upload almost any document format and transform it into a virtual flipping book. Of course, you can share and or embed the resulting creation. For example, you can embed the book on your classroom homepage or wiki.
  • Tikatok: Aimed at younger students and is a wonderful tool for story creation. Students begin with story starters or a completely blank book. Text, images and imagination are added and an amazing digital book is created. The final product can be viewed online and a print copy can be ordered.
  • Mixbook: Very similar to Tikatok but features some sophisticated editing tools perfect for middle or high school students. The site includes numerous templates and images to ensure a professional-looking book. Mixbook also offers accounts designed for teachers.
  • Epubbud: Allows you to convert and existing document into an e-book or create the book on the site itself. The difference is that it converts the book to the epub format, which is compatible with numerous readers and tablets. The user interface is not as elegant as some of the other website choices but is an efficient way to generate an epub format book.
  • Lulu: Like a combination of Epubbud and Mixbook. You have the ability to upload a document and convert to epub format. In addition, the site contains photo book tools very similar to Mixbook. Add images and text to tell a story. Tools are also available for creating poetry books and digital portfolios.
  • Scribd: Arguably the best known online publishing site. Upload any file or even import from Google Docs. One drawback for the school setting is the number of advertisements.
  • YouPublish: YouPublish is similar to Scribd. Upload virtually any type of file, including video, and it will be viewable and shareable. It’s very easy to upload content and this site works well for older students.

Give these web 2.0 publishing sites a try with your students and post your feedback here on the Teacher Experience Exchange.

Handbook Of Emerging Technologies For Learning

CLIL: HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR BILINGUAL LESSON PLAN IN A BLOG

Bilingual Public Schools of Primary education in Andalusia are working really hard organizing the new work plan for every lesson when teaching Science, Art and PE in a foreign language. A good way that can contribute to develop that lesson plan is the use of ICT through a blog. It is very useful for so early aged pupils to have colourful and creative material that connect with their likes and motivation.
My practical experience with this kids had made my mind to have some clear ideas as proposals kit for educators who would like to work with blogs in the classroom. The main points in the organization of Bilingual material is:
1. Vocabulary through images as much as possible and language structures.
2. Vocabulary with the use of WORDLE: BEAUTIFUL WORD CLOUD. It is useful to review what they are working in the unit or just to remmember what they did before and foreign language input.
3. Videos related with the unit adapted to the topic and to the ages of pupils. If you can select one that can show subtitles or words at the same time the video is taking place, the best for your lesson.
4. Presentations with images and selected structures with vocabulary about the unit.
5. Mental map. Your children can create it with you in your Digital Board, so they develop cooperative working tasks. Remember that they can work previously this conceptual map with the partners in pairs to participate in a colaborative map with the teacher.
6. Interactive games about the unit. The teacher role here is very important to moderate the participation of the pupils and to focus on the appropriate development.
7. Connecting people. The children makes a final product about it and share it with some pupils in the world. For this activity, it is very useful Skype for educators and eTwinning projects; just you need to organize it previously your unit is taking place and … ready!!! Children feel very enthusiastic and really motivated when they know they are going to show their own product to others. That means sharing.

9 YouTube Tips and Tricks for Teachers

YouTube is still the best place to find videos to use in the classroom, despite being blocked in many schools. If your school does allow you to use YouTube there are a few cool tips and tricks to improve your use of YouTube in the classroom.

Remove the clutter:

Often, the biggest problem with YouTube isn’t the video content, but some of the inappropriate comments that can occur in the space below the video. It is possible to make use of several sites which clean up YouTube and remove the page clutter:

1. QuieTube
QuieTube gives you a button which you can drag to your toolbar. When you see a YouTube video you want to use, click the button and you’ll get a URL which will let you watch just the video. Embed this link into your IWB page to go straight to the video page.

2. View Pure
Go to the View Pure website, enter the URL of a YouTube video and it strips out everything but the video. Very simple to use. You can even drag a button to your desktop which does the job. You can also then take the URL of the page you get, and hyperlink to that page.

3. Accessible YouTube
Accessible YouTube is is an interface to YouTube designed for people who access their computers via either 2 switches or a mouse. It allows the user to use two keys/switches or a mouse to navigate through a list of videos, and watch any or all of them. Currently the list of videos can be a playlist, the results of a video search, the related videos for a particular video, or YouTube’s most popular videos. For now, you must use Firefox in order for it to work.

4. YouTube XL
YouTube XL is a modified version of YouTube designed to use on large-screen televisions, and so also on Interactive Whiteboards. The interface makes it simpler to use by cutting out a lot of the clutter on the page. Theres no way of hyperlinking to a specific video, but you can add any you like to your Favourites, which you can then access under the Favourites tab on the main YouTube XL screen.

Other YouTube Tricks

5. Hyperlink to specific point in a video
It’s possible to link directly to a specific point in a YouTube video. Play the video, and keep an eye on the white blob that moves along the timeline below the video, (the thing you drag to move forwards/back through the video). When you get to the point in the video that you want to jump to, right click on the blob and choose “copy video URL at current time”.

If you now use this link as a hyperlink in your IWB software or PowerPoint, the video will start playing at the point that you chose.

6. Disable related videos
If you don’t want students to see other content that may be related but unsuitable then all you need to do is to add ‘&rel=0′ to the end of the url part of the embed code.

7. Watch in High Quality

Don’t forget that you can choose the video quality of the video, where available. You will able to see the video quality currently being shown towards the bottom right corner of the video. Click on that to see if other settings are available. When displaying on a large whiteboard, choose the best settings your internet connection can cope with.

8. Subtitles / Closed Captioning

If available, you can turn on subtitles by clicking on the CC button. You can even try a beta service which attempts to transcribe the audio on the fly – although this can be a little hit and miss.

Click on the CC button and then choose “settings” to change the size, font and colour of the captions.

9. Interactive Transcripts

Many videos now also have an interactive transcript. Keep an eye out for the Interactive Transcript icon below the video, which looks like this:

When clicked, a transcript of all the dialogue is displayed. Each line will highlight in time with the video. Even better, click on a line in the transcript to jump to that section of the video. This is a handy way of jumping to a chosen part of a very long video.

You could also select sections of text and copy/paste into a document, perhaps to make a comprehension activity out of it.

Not every video has an interactive transcript. But do look out for the feature where available. To see an example of it at work, take a look at this video.
